甲骨文双语小学堂（了不起的甲骨文）

　　甲骨文“龋”字，形象上是一个“虫”字钻入了“齿”字。殷商时期的先民已对龋齿有了基础理解，认为牙齿上的窟窿是由口腔中的虫子引发的，这也是“虫牙”这一词语的由来。

　　The Chinese character “龋” （qǔ, denoting dental caries） in oracle bone script is a pictographic compound: it consists of the character “虫” （chóng, denoting worm） burrowing into the character “齿” （chǐ,  denoting tooth）. As early as the Yin-Shang Period, our ancestors had already developed a basic understanding of dental caries. They believed that tooth cavities were caused by worms in the mouth, which is the origin of the Chinese colloquial term “虫牙” （chóngyá, literally “worm tooth”, for decayed teeth）.
