　　“葱”不见于甲骨文，心上加一短竖这个字是“悤”字，表示心有孔窍，是聪明的意思，也就是“聪”的古字。该字后来成为“葱”的声符，“葱”之所以叫“葱”，大概也是叶子中空的原因。

　　The Chinese character “葱” (cōng) cannot be found in oracle bone script. The character “悤” is formed by adding a short vertical stroke above “心,” which means “the heart has its hidden depths,” conveying the idea of intelligence. It is an ancient form of the character “聪” (cōng). Later on, “悤” became the phonetic component of “葱.” The name “葱” likely comes from the fact that its leaves are hollow. （文字翻译 童林）
